Ease the transition to back-to-school season with this original crafts project. Make a time capsule to mark the end of summer and the start of a new year at school.

Ease the transition to back-to-school season with this original crafts project. Make a time capsule to mark the end of summer and the start of a new year at school. Have the kids add things to the box that symbolize their summer. Ask how they feel about the challenges awaiting. You'll see, they'll soon be in the mood to GO forward into the new season!

Keep the time capsule in storage till this time next year, when you can reopen it and relive the memories of last summer, as well as add a few keepsakes from the current year's vacation.

Construct a time capsule

1. As you would with a gift, wrap an empty  Flamingo box (at least 600g) in eye-catching paper, bought at the store or decorated by you or your child. Keep one end of the box open to insert the keepsakes. When the box is full, seal it with the wrapping paper.

2. Some things you can add to the box:

In a small notebook, have your child write about the following topics:

  • Their fondest memories of the summer, their favourite food, colour, book, film, etc. Remember to include their least favourites as well.
  • Have them express their thoughts on the new school year. What's their favourite subject? Science? Gym? Include the name of the new teacher, as well as what your child would like to do and looks forward to doing this year.

Also add:

  • Personal details: footprint and handprint in washable paint, height, weight, a clipping of hair, etc.
  • Pictures from family vacations, pictures with their friends, etc.
  • Postcards and party invitations they received
  • Vacation souvenirs such as a vial of beach sand, seashells, dried flowers, etc.

3. Tie up the box with twine or string and store it in an out-of-the-way place until next year.
